What happens when biology meets engineering

What is it though?

If you were looking for a clear, precise, and official definition of synthetic biology, I need to tell you the truth. As of now, there is none.

Isn’t this the most exciting point? Imagine working on something that is just being discovered. It’s said that biotechnology in general, is at the same point where technology was a few decades ago. …

A Machine Learning Project

If I actually turn this into an app, I should get a better name 🙈

What problem would you dedicate decades of your life to solving?

Personally, that’s a hard question to answer. It’s easier for me to simply work on interesting things. Having done research on the gut microbiome in the past, and having gone through a simple yet enriching Artificial Intelligence journey, I found out that I could intersect these two areas to build something “interesting”.

You’ve probably heard of the human microbiome in the past. It’s this community of trillions of microorganisms living in our mouths, skin, vagina, and yes: in our gut!

What are they useful for? What do they do…

Learning from Peter Thiel’s book Zero to One

Peter Thiel was the co-founder of PayPal, the Founders Fund, he was the first outside investor in Facebook, and also started the Thiel Fellowship for those young people willing to make an impact by taking the unconventional path.

Having watched other videos about his ideas and beliefs, I’ve found that the best source of knowledge is definitely his book: Zero to One. If I were to summarize it in one word, it would be unconventional.

Although many consider Zero to One to be a bible for startups, I think the lessons can be applied to life in general. …

A take on Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Credits

If happiness is the ultimate purpose of human existence — or that’s what Aristotle would say — then are we over-complicating life? Shouldn’t everyone be happy by default?

We all know that there are some constrains that challenge the release of dopamine in our brains. In the era of bio and nanotechnology, does this mean that happiness is simple chemistry and thus we can hack it? Flow showed me that the answer is no.

Flow is not a personal development book at all. It’s rather the compilation of several studies made on optimal experience, from many different angles. …

Handwritten digits recognition project

When I say CNN, I’m really talking about a Convolutional Neural Network, not the news channel. That said, you don’t need to be an expert in programming or AI to build code that recognizes handwritten digits. That’s what I did.

My purpose for this article is to explain in simple words what it means to create a neural network. I’ll decompose technical terms, show you the 5 main steps that I followed, and explain how this basic project is the foundation for a huge part of the AI revolution.

In theory

In the past, we thought that machines couldn’t surpass human intelligence…

A full guide to the sustainable future of food

We’re running out of time

I wasn’t sure if having this section was worth it. We’ve all heard about the ecological crisis. Some of us, even since kindergarten. Still, how many of us have genuinely reflected on the possibility of Earth becoming an inhabitable place before the year 2050? The short answer is very few people. It’s just not sustainable for our mental health.

Unlike most of my friends, I don’t believe that “small actions” can save us. As I like to say, we are treating with the human factor, which means that we only realize our mistakes until it’s too late to fix things…

Biohacking is not a crime

Josiah Zayner is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. He breaks stereotypes and has shown me that that science and biohacking are about making things work through first principles, no matter the resources you have.

So I really just want to spread the idea and to let more curious people know about it.

This is the article to learn more about biohacking, and Josiah Zayner is the person to ask.

Seeking perspective about gender equality around the world

I used to think that it’s almost absurd to live in a country where more than 10 women are killed every day, a raper is being “elected” as a governor, and more than 62% of female executives don’t get a promotion because it’s given to a man.

Now I agree more with Einstein:

“Two things are infinite. The universe and human stupidity… and I’m not too sure about the universe”

The 9M Movement

Just in case you don’t know yet, let me give you a little more context on what’s happening in Mexico these days, apart from the evident injustice and chaos.

Malignant or Bening?

A few weeks ago, I decided to start my journey in Artificial Intelligence. Not because I’m a techy person, but because I understand the disruptive potential that it has in any given field.

Now, there was a huge challenge that I had to overcome: I didn’t like programming because I’m not good at it. I know that everybody says that, but the truth is that, in the past, I couldn’t even complete a simple Python course. Yes, that’s how much of a starter I was.

So I know the frustration that a lot of beginners may feel. This is why…

Humanity’s last invention?

Taking the perspective of someone who knows absolutely nothing about the topic, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become just a popular term over the past years.
Topics (or fancy headers) like “AI diagnosing cancer” or “6 Serious Dangers of Artificial Intelligence” have now become mainstream.

There’s hype, and there’s fear. People talk about “beating the algorithm”, referring to the AI technology behind social media. Or what about those who tell you about automation and how AI will take over our jobs?

Coming from a biotechnology background (not very related to AI), my intention behind this article is making it easy for…
